The meaning behind our name

The library is named after Padma, a woman from the village who never had the opportunity to learn to read or write. Her story reflects the experiences of thousands of women across rural Bangladesh who have been denied access to education because of family circumstances, socioeconomic barriers and other challenges.

Despite these barriers, their contributions to their families and communities are no less valuable than those of men. They work tirelessly, often without recognition, caring for their families and supporting the next generation.

The name “Padma” therefore carries a symbolic meaning. It honours not only one woman but also the countless women whose quiet dedication and sacrifices too often go unnoticed.
